Yes or no-and if so,by how much?
I would double it.A 1 litre bottle of cheap spirits would then be ~£17 instead of the present £10.
I would also withdraw all supermarket licences to sell alcohol of any kind,and double all penalties for selling to minors in any cir$%^&stances,including bars.
I would rigourously enforce the law that requires a publican NOT to serve anyone who's had too much,and double the penalties now in place.
If an establishment persists in serving drunks with more drink-withdraw their licence after the third/fourth offence.
If a person is drunk in public then automatic detention(and automatic blood alcohol tests) until a MASSIVE fine is paid.
I note that on several of these boards that “Thank God it's the weekend-what you doing-got anything lined up?” threads appear.The answers given are about 90% “gonna get blitzed!!”

I wouldn't mind those people getting blitzed privately if they didn't later clog up our struggling Health Service with their damaged livers/brains-if they wish to drink to excess they might at least have the decency to find a quiet spot to expire in without causing any more trouble and expense to the rest of us.
Anything that reclaims our town centres for the use of ordinary people at weekends should be tried,and this suggestionseems to be so obvious that I'm suprised at Gordon Brown's wishy-washy response.
I DO enjoy a drink,by the way.
